How to Plan for Home Emergencies

Home emergency - Preparing for the worse

In most cases a home emergency usually occurs when we least expect it. It also happens quite often when the family is not together. This means that much of the time, you will have to cope with things on your own when an emergency situation occurs.

You will need to have your own food, water and any other necessary supplies. You will also need to ensure that such supplies can last for at least three or four days though it would be ideal if you were prepared for a longer duration.

Even though local state and town officials are usually on a scene after a disaster, they usually cannot reach everyone immediately. Even though if you are fortunate you could get help in just a matter of hours, it could take days. It is also important to remember that the basic services such as water, gas, electricity, sewage treatment may be disrupted for days if not weeks. You should therefore ensure that you have a coherent home emergency plan.

A good home emergency plan usually requires that one has an elaborate basic emergency survival kit. Such a survival kit should consist of:

Food - You need to have food that can last you at least three days. The food will need to be non-perishable and contain a lot of nutrients.

Water - You will need a gallon of water per person per day for a minimum of three days. This water will be used for drinking and sanitation. It is very important to be hygienic during this time as communicable diseases are usually manifest during a time when the environment is polluted and dirty.

You will also need a battery powered or a hand held radio that can give you constant emergency updates. By getting these updates you know how you need to plan your further emergency plan strategy. If you have supplies for three day and it looks as thought it will be a week or longer before things are back to normal you will need to adjust.

It could never hurt to have a flashlight and extra batteries. This will help you see well as the electricity will normally have been disrupted during a disaster situation.

You will also need to have a first aid kit. If an injury or sickness should occur and one is not available it could put someone in a dangerous medical situation. Experts say that it is during the first few moments of an emergency that lives are usually lost. It is best to be prepared in every way.

A whistle will also come in handy if you are trapped and need to call out for help. You or a family member could be in a totally inaccessible place where a natural voice can not be heard. A whistle can therefore come in handy in such a situation.

A dust mask will help to filter any contaminated air. You should also have plastic sheeting and duct tape so as to help you have a clean place with fresh air.

Other supplies for a home emergency should include:

Moist towelettes
Garbage bags
Plastic ties
Wrench/pliers
Can opener
Local maps or a phone with GPS navigation systems and maps. This will help you to locate places and directions easily.
A cell phone with chargers, a solar charger or inverter will come in handy if the electricity supply has been cut off.

It is also important that you include other items in the home emergency survival kit. Such items are listed below:

Formula and diapers for infants.
Enough prescription medication.
Important documents such as bank account records, insurance policies, and personal identification in a waterproof and very portable container.
You will need to have some cash and travelers checks. You may need it to purchase the basic necessities before relief help arrives.
a warm blanket and adequate clothing.

As you see an emergency plan requires some thinking ahead and going to a little trouble. However, a good emergency plan has saved many a life.
